Warrnambool’s New Gem - Lot 17

If you haven’t heard, there’s a fresh face on the food scene in Warrnambool, the brand-new restaurant Lot 17. And trust me, this one’s got a bit of history, a bit of heart, and a whole lot of share-plates.

Who’s behind? It’s a bit of a full-circle story actually.

The couple behind Lot 17 are as genuine as they come. Nicole grew up in Warrnambool. Her parents even owned a pizza shop in town in the 1980s, so this feels like a full circle for her. Hugh spent time cooking in a Michelin-starred kitchen in London, then hopped around Australia working kitchens, before landing back here. They also have two young daughers, so things are very busy!

Nicole and Hugh bought the property a few years ago, and have spent time restoring it, putting in hours of work so that Lot 17 isn’t just another dining spot… and we personally think they have nailed it!

From dusty old allotment to stylish social dining

Lot 17 sits on Timor Street, in a property that’s been around since the 1850s, so it’s got a lot of character. Back in the day it was part of “allotment 17,” which is exactly where the name comes from. It’s had many lives: a saddlery, a general store, you name it. The current owners, Nicole and Hugh are returning to their hometown roots. In the reno they even uncovered some relics: an old ice-cream tin, a packet of cigarettes and matches, vintage wallpaper, even a letter. All now proudly displayed on their wall of memories.

Stepping inside feels like a mix of old-school charm and modern vibes. And that’s exactly what the couple were going for, a place that remembers Warrnambool’s past, but doesn’t feel like a dusty museum.

It’s not fine dining, it’s friendly dining

Lot 17 isn’t about formal courses or fancy food on a plate. It’s more like a Sunday sesh at your mate’s place, big laughs, good tucker, and share plates. It’s “social dining” - plates come out when they’re ready, everyone grabs what they like, and you just get into it.

We ordered the ‘Feed Me’ on the Thursday night we visited, and it was perfect. We got to try pretty much the whole menu. We were two couples with two hungry men, and there was plenty of food. (except the dessert was so good, we ordered another!!)

If you aren’t into sharing, it’s ok - there is a menu, well, except on Sundays, there’s no menu at all. It’s a “chef’s table” / banquet style feed where you just rock up and let the kitchen surprise you. Perfect if you’re up for a bit of spontaneity and good company.

Lot 17’s ‘Memory Wall’, amazing ‘Feed Me’ style share menu, and stunning old facade - love those green tiles!

Should you give it a try? Absolutely!

If you’re in Warrnambool and craving something that feels a bit different - Lot 17 isn’t pretentious, but it’s not boring.

It’s a fresh breath of culinary air in town, perfect for a casual night out, a catch-up with mates, or a dinner that doesn’t fuss over formalities. Nicole and Hugh welcome you like a family member they haven’t seen in ages, and are always up for a laugh.

Grab a crew, book a table, and get ready to dig in. You might just walk out thinking, “Why didn’t we do this sooner?”
